How can risk assessment and prediction models support suicide prevention in correctional settings?

Professor Seena Fazel of the University of Oxford will discuss risk assessment and prediction modelling for self-harm and suicide risk in correctional populations. The talk will examine an important area at the intersection of mental health, correctional healthcare, public health and data-informed practice.

Fazel is Professor of Forensic Psychiatry and Director of the Centre for Suicide Research at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on adverse outcomes among people with mental illness, including suicide, self-harm, violence and crime. He has led major studies of prison mental health and developed risk assessment tools used internationally in prison, probation and forensic mental health services.

He holds an honorary appointment with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. After more than 13 years as a visiting psychiatrist in a local prison, he now works clinically in a community forensic psychiatry service. He is also an expert member of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody, which advises the UK Government.
